Trinity-Kitten #Reviews the Pawsync Smart Pet Feeder

by | Nov 21, 2024 | Cat Behavior & Care, Dog Training & Care, Sponsored & Reviews | 0 comments

I get many “pitches” from companies often offering me products to review, and am very selective. In late August, I received an offer to receive the newly released Pawsync Smart Pet Feeder for a possible review, but I was not compensated to provide my opinion.

Why Cats Need Multiple Meals

Dogs tend to be gulpers and may even gorge when offered the opportunity. Read more about how dogs eat in this post. Cats instead are intermittent feeders. They evolved–to eat smaller “mouse-size” meals multiple times a day. Temperature of the food, form of food, and how often available all influence the kitty appetite.

I’m a big proponent of feeding cats (some dogs, too) multiple times a day. As I work from home, Karma-Kat and Trinity-Kitten are fed 5+ times a day, and Shadow-Pup also gets at least twice-daily scheduled meals. Faithful readers know, though, that we planned a trip out of town for my Dad’s 97th birthday in late October.

We made plans for several “spa days” for Shadow. But cats do best when they stay in their familiar territory and have a qualified pet sitter visit. I didn’t want to over-ask the pet sitter, and so I reached out to Pawsync and they graciously sent me the Smart Pet Feeder. It seemed a great time to see if this lived up to the possibilities.

What Is The Pawsyc Smart Pet Feeder?

Billed as the “world’s smartest Smart Pet Feeder,” the product launched this past summer. It holds and dispenses predetermined amounts of food on the schedule you design (multiple meals), with set up and monitoring via your smart phone.

Designed for cats and dogs up to 20 lbs., the Pawsync Smart Pet Feeder can store enough feed for furry family members for approximately 12 to 20 days. With ample kibble capacity, the 3.6-liter feed tank holds enough dry feed for small- to medium-sized cats and dogs while you’re away.

The Pawsync Smart Pet Feeder is available at pawsync.com for $99.99 (it looks like they have a discount coupon available on the website, too!). And look at that…it’s the #1 New Release on Amazon here: Pawsync Smart Pet Feeder also is available from Amazon as well.

FEATURES INCLUDE:

  • Automatic Food Tracking: Automatically track your pet’s food intake via the Pawsync app to monitor eating habits.
  • Dynamic Feeding Modes: With Slow, and Smart modes, food can be dispersed intermittently, detect when leftover food is still in the bowl and self-adjust the quantity accordingly for the next scheduled meal.
  • Smart Jam Fix Technology: Avoid blockages that leave your pet hungry with this innovative auto-reverse rotating technology.
  • Personalized Meal Calls: Record a personalized voice message to play at mealtime to make your pet feel the love.
  • Smart Control and Notifications: Control the pet feeder from anywhere, create feeding schedules, and receive real-time eating notifications and alerts when the tank needs to be refilled.
  • Integrated Weighing Scale: The built-in scale allows for precise measurement and feeding for pets who rely on that accuracy for their wellbeing.
  • Stainless Steel Feeding Bowl: Made from 304 food-grade stainless steel with a BPA-free plastic holder, pets eat with the same safety standards we set for ourselves.
  • Secure Locking Lid: Seals food inside for freshness, while pet-proofing the feeder. A separate adjacent compartment for the desiccant pack additionally protects the longevity and quality of the food.
  • Low Food Detection: Built-in sensors let pet parents know when food is running low.
  • 6-day Backup Power Supply: To ensure operation in case of emergencies such as power outages, battery mode brings 6 days of backup power.

How to Set Up

  1. Unbox. My Smart Pet Feeder came in a sturdy cardboard shipping box, with the unit packed inside a second an interior box.
  2. After lifting out the unit, slide the Lid Release Switch to the unlocked position.
  3. Remove the feeder scale, stainless steel bowl, power adapter, and dessicant pack from inside the feeder tank.
  4. Discard the outer plastic packaging from the desiccant pack, and place into the specified compartment–to keep food fresh. They recommend replacing the pack each month.
  5. Open battery compartment on the back of the unit, and attach the power adapter. Alternatively, you can install 3 x 1.5V D dry batteries (not included). NOTE: Recommended to ALWAYS use the power adapter and only rely on batteries as a backup.
  6. Press the feeder scale firmly onto the dock at the front of the unit.
  7. Place the stainless-steel food bowl on the scale. Plug in the feeder.
  8. Scan the QR code to download the Pawsync app (on the Quick Start foldout paper guide included). Or search for “Pawsync” in either the Apple App Store or Google Play store.
  9. Open the app, log in, or sign up.
  10. Follow the in-app instructions to set up your smart pet feeder.
  11. Calibrate the feeder scale, making sure feeder is on a level surface and bowl is empty. The feeder then keeps track of how much your pet eats, as well as dispensing predetermined amounts of food.
  12. Fill the tank with your optimum dry food ration.
  13. Press FEED once to distribute and stir food, then FEED again to dispense.

How We Tested It

Trinity had to get her paws and nose into everything as soon as I began unboxing the new unit. It took me a while to get the phone app correctly to sync. But after that, playing with the various settings worked well.

You can choose various amounts to feed, in ounces: 0.4, 0.7, 1.1, 1.4, 1,8, 2.1 and so on up to 3.5 ounces at a time. You also can schedule at very specific times throughout the day–every day or only specific days/times. I found it worked well to schedule a feeding at about 6:00 am, the time when both Karma and Trinity decide they want “first breakfast.” LOL! That let’s us sleep until a more reasonable wakeup time.

When in the room, the cats immediately heard the food dispensed. Trinity took to the feeding right away. You can also record YOUR VOICE with a word/phrase that tells the pet that food has been dispensed. Shortly after they empty the food bowl, the app lets you know they’ve eaten X-amount of food.

The app also lets you input the brand of food, along with your pet’s body condition, to calculate ideal amounts to feed. That’s a nifty option. I tend to vary brands of food–because I want my animals to readily accept a variety–so that doesn’t really help me.

I set up the app to dispense the smallest amount 0.4 ounces five times a day, just to test. Yes, it worked great! However… While Karma-Kat showed interest, he can no longer easily leap to the countertop. That means finding a secure floor placement with an electrical outlet. It also means Shadow-Pup could easily scarf up the floor level food. That wouldn’t be a problem if the dog’s at his boarding kennel, but for everyday use, it proves challenging.

Also, Trinity-Kitty gets to the food first and eats it all. Karma gets none, and the youngster doubles up on nutrition. I must feed my cats separately for that reason, and would need to invest in a second feeder and isolate the cats/feeders to different parts of the house for this to work for me for everyday use–or if away.

Final Thoughts

This product offers a lot of benefits and great flexibility. In particular, it works great for pets able to share the bowl, or for singleton pets under 20 pounds. With busy schedules, I like offering the option to pet parents to provide convenient ways to schedule feedings. I could see this especially as a boon to pets with health challenges that rely on regular feedings (like diabetic kitties, for instance).

What happened when we were gone five days to visit Dad? Our pet sitter visited Karma and Trinity 4-5 times every day, wow! And by the final couple of days, they even accepted petting and playtime, so we didn’t have to rely (this time) on the feeder. But I’m very glad to have it for times when we need it.

What about y’all? Have you used automatic feeders successfully?

Dog Problems? Cat Concerns? Here’s How to Find Pet Behavior Help

Do you know how do you find pet behavior help? As a certified animal behavior consultant for cats and dogs, I receive many requests for pet behavior help. Solving cat behavior problems and bad dog behavior can be a challenge. Some of these I address with articles explaining cat behavior (how to stop meowing, for example, or dealing with cat aggression), as well as puppy and dog behavior issues like noise phobias and separation behaviors.

Some pet behavior challenges have solutions through reading books and articles, others via phone call advice, and more serious issues (dog aggression, for example) need one-on-one help. But how do the behavior experts receive training?

Dog Hot Spots & Home Remedies

Dog hot spots often happen during both the spring and fall shedding season and are the bane of many dogs’ existence. Some develop hot spots all year long, especially those with very thick, wooly coats. Have your dogs ever suffered from hot spots?

Fortunately, hot spots are not a problem for cats. Kitties, though, do have their own issues with shedding and hairballs. Bathing cats can help with that.

When dog hot spots are a chronic problem, it can be aggravating and frustrating for pet owners. And painful for the dog! While severe problems need veterinary attention, home remedies for dog hot spots often help enormously. Here’s what you need to know.

Memorial Day & National K9 Veteran’s Day

Memorial Day honors the American men and women who have lost their lives while serving in the military. It originally honored those who died in the Civil War, and now honors those who died in any war. It is also known as Decoration Day. This holiday differs from Veterans’ Day which honors all those who served in the military.

There is no Memorial Day for the brave military K9s who served and lost their lives, often heroically saving their human partners. I can’t imagine the bond that must exist between the soldier and his or her war dog—they share things and stand against danger to protect the rest of us against horrors we don’t want to think about. And because of them, we don’t have to worry about such things. Thank you.

I’m eternally grateful to those who sacrifice for our freedom. Losing a beloved animal companion anytime cuts deep. It must be horrific to lose a comrade-in-arms, including those with four feet and fur.

And since I focus on pet issues, I want to shine a light on the dogs of the military. There is a National K9s Veteran’s Day on March 13, too. But here’s an excerpt from my book DOG LIFE  to shine a light on military dogs through the ages.

What to Do About Dog Choking & Cat Choking: First Aid & Pet Heimlich Help

Have your pets ever choked on something they chew? Shadow-Pup loves to chew up inedible objects, no matter how much we supervise. Learn how to administer the pet Heimlich to save a life!

When Karma-Kat came to live with us, that put lots of cat toys within Magical-Dawg’s reach. Seren had never been too keen on such things and she was already nine years old when Magic came as a puppy. He loved to swipe Seren’s “sparkle-balls” and ended up with sparkly poop. Once Karma’s toys added to the kitty quotient, the big ol’ dog had a field day seeing how many cat toys he could stuff into his jaws.

Bravo played with rocks. And the new puppy Shadow loves to chew sticks. He’s already got one caught in the roof of his mouth. That’s the perfect opportunity for choking, and a need for the pet Heimlich. I hope that we’ll never need it, though. In case you do, read on!

Please Fence Me In: Creating Good Neighbors & Keeping Dogs Safe

Do you have a dog fence? Magical-Dawg used to take off after “critters” every so often, racing around the 13-acre spread (or beyond). We eventually trained him to stay with us, even when off-leash. It would have devastated me if Magic disappeared. He was microchipped, but folks would need to catch him first.

Bravo was a very different dog. He was so good off-leash during most morning rambles and didn’t want to go too far away from us. He’d chase and play with his “big-ball” in the field, and baptize every tree and grass tussock. And once he lost his leg, he couldn’t get out the back fenced area even if he’d wanted to.

Shadow-Pup, though, takes after Magical-Dawg. He’s so small, not even the fenced back area keeps him contained. He also likes to dig, so we needed to address possible escapes. A fence is a dog’s best friend!

Why Cats Fight! What to Do About Cat Fighting

How do you stop a cat fight? And how do you know if the cat fighting turns serious—rather than just kitten play? Shadow-Pup thinks it’s great fun to chase and wrestle with Karma-Kat. We supervise, of course, and interrupt the play should one or the other object.

There are many kinds of cat aggression, and many are perfectly normal behaviors. Certainly, it’s not fair to you or the cats to allow cats to fight. Learn how to recognize the potential and reasons behind cat aggression and fighting cats, and what you can do.

How to Make Pets Vomit

A dog vomits more easily than nearly any other creature. So why in the world would a pet parent want to make pets vomit? When dogs or cats eat the wrong thing that could cause harm, you can save your pets’ lives by inducing vomiting.

Pets vomit for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes it’s because of illness, while other times the dog vomiting or cat hairball upchuck is more innocuous. Some pets eat grass to induce vomiting, or they get into dangerous candy that makes them sick. However, sometimes making pets vomit means life or death. That means you need to know how to make pets vomit.
