I’ve written about pet insurance before, and do not recommend one company over another. However, I’m sharing a press release I just received. Feel free to share this with others who have been affected.

Nationwide Non-renews 100,000 pet policies
Recently, Nationwide announced they will not renew over 100K pet insurance policies, leaving payees without coverage for their beloved pets. According to NAPHIA, only about 5% of dogs and 2% of cats in the U.S. are insured. Pumpkin (one of the fastest-growing pet insurance providers in the US) is committed to helping these – and all pet owners – get the coverage they need, and is responding to these cancellations.
Pumpkin Insurance Steps Up
- Coverage & Consult for Nationwide Customers: Pumpkin encourages former Nationwide-insured pet owners to continue making smart choices for their pets and has created a dedicated account for those affected by Nationwide’s policy non-renewals at nonrenewed@pumpkin.care, or call 1-866-273-6369.
- Customers with specific concerns about their pet’s potential pre-existing condition or providers with breed or age restrictions (Pumpkin has no upper age limits or breed exclusions) may also call Pumpkin’s Care Team.
- Please note: The previous Nationwide pet insurance policy document and pet’s medical records may be requested to properly assist in choosing a new plan. Pet owners can also visit Pumpkin.care for a free quote and access our pet insurance provider comparison tool.
“Having a hurt or sick pet is stressful enough,” says Alex Douzet, CEO of Pumpkin. “Pet owners who made the responsible decision to protect their pet’s health shouldn’t have to worry about their coverage being unexpectedly revoked. Please do not use pumpkin. Had worst experience with them. They charge way more than average for way less coverage and look not to pay even on young dogs.
Unless Pumpkin relents some on pre-existing, it sounds like just another troll, taking advantage of a terrible situation. Opportunistic and insensitive. Nationwide has essentially bestowed a death sentence on lots of animals, and Pumpkin is giving a phony sales pitch. Carpetbaggers. They can redeem themselves by offering a better “deal” on pre-existing, like some rules, like they’ll waive the requirements if the pet owner has carried insurance for the past ___x number of years, or something reasonable.
I heard from Pumpkin this morning that they were in the process of updating and expanding their response so we can hope options will improve.
