Voting Open! Name That Hero Dog!

by | Sep 18, 2025 | Books, Contest, Dog Training & Care | 2 comments

You’ve patiently waited for this–and I’m delighted to share with you that I’m now in edits for the next book in my thriller series TRICK OR TREAT #9. No, not yet available for pre-order, but soon, once I receive the new cover design. Yes, the book again will be available as an Ebook, paperback, hardcover, large print, and (eventually) audiobook.

In the tradition of the previous books, I include HERO ANIMAL CHARACTERS in each story. These are chosen by my newsletter subscribers nominating possibilities, often sharing fun pictures, touching and uplifting stories, experiences, funny quirks and descriptions. Nominees are posted here in an open POLL for the world to see and VOTE for the winning hero pet. This book not only features the regular main characters like Shadow and Macy-cat but also includes three hero pets.

The three winners will have their pet name/character featured in the story as a hero, acknowledgements in the FACT-FICTION-ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS in the back and also receive a paw-tographed print copy of the published book. You can vote as often as you like–and campaign by sharing with all your friends to also vote so YOUR pick wins the coveted title of HERO PET!

Vote For Your Hero Pet! DEADLINE SEPT. 28, 2025 AT 10 pm CST

HERO CAT: Any breed or mix adult cat. An escape artist, able to open lever doors, likes hiding in knapsacks, climbing high levels. He or she belongs to Lia, and makes several appearances, including opening Shadow’s kennel door when September’s under attack–and also attacking/defending from the same bad guy at the end of the book. (Vote for hero cat here!)

HERO HORSE: Lia’s horse from her youth–as you remember, her grandparents raise horses. This hero horse helps defend Lia when she’s attacked and carries her to help when Lia’s injured. Any breed, any age, any description–but must still be fit enough for Lia (an adult) to ride. (Vote for hero horse here!)

HERO DOG: Any breed, any mix, any age (not a pup but could be adolescent). He was abandoned at Lia’s boarding kennel and temporarily stays with Lia’s grandparents. This dog also has many appearances, loves to dig out of the fenced back yard, and tries to protect Lia (and others) when attacked. Vote for hero dog below!

I’ve included pictures that were shared, and placeholders for others.

What’s TRICK OR TREAT About?

THE GHOSTS ARE REAL…

Past injustice haunts the present. To uproot the rot and banish the ghosts, a canine hero must protect his family before a killer destroys their future.

Exhausted from dealing with fallout from her birth father’s crime connections, September Day focuses on healing her soul. She relies on the support of chosen family, friends, and her service dog Shadow and cat Macy.

But when she agrees to track her friend Lia’s missing cat September also discovers a murder victim. And a traumatized child with secrets. Guarding her wellbeing, she keeps her distance and turns over the case to the police.

When the killer strikes again, and Lia named as a suspect, she’s terrified the deaths have something to do with her family’s vicious legacy. Determined to stop the killer from terrorizing more family and friends, September depends on Shadow to keep them all safe.

Can September and Shadow brave the burning truth before everything she loves turns to ash?

I am a big fan of little dogs, currently having a chubby chi and a skinny chi mix. big dogs have the mass to knock down bad guys or pull a person out of the water, but little guys have other skills that can help. smart, protective of people and/or property, ability to track, lots of energy. some people, especially children, might have some fear of a big dog, but a little mop dog is easy to like.

Why Dogs Chew Your Best Stuff

Dogs use their mouths like people use our hands. That means nearly everything goes into the puppy’s mouth as he explores the world, and teething pups chew to relieve the discomfort. Dogs never outgrow the gnawing habit, though, and that can get them in trouble.

Here’s why they target your favorite things…and what you can do to reduce the risk.

Pet Dehydration? Causes, Symptoms & First Aid for Dog Dehydration and Cat Dehydration

Cat and dog dehydration refers to the excessive loss of body water. Pets are prone to dehydration when the weather gets very hot, and they don’t have access to enough water. As a result, they can develop heatstroke. More often, though, dog and cat dehydration happens from vomiting and diarrhea.

Here in Texas, we’ve had weeks of triple-digit temperatures. I worry about the outside pets, but even indoor cats and dogs can suffer from dehydration. Normal water loss occurs in the pet’s bathroom deposits, through moisture exhaled with the breath, and through sweat. These fluids get replaced when the cat and dog eat and drink.

Any illness may prompt pets to stop eating and drinking, and prolonged fever increases the loss of body fluid. Specific disease conditions or injuries like diabetes or kidney disease may cause excessive urination that also causes of dehydration.

Cats evolved as desert creatures and have an amazing ability to conserve water, but cat dehydration can still kill. Even though cats seem to prefer to drink water in the weirdest places (the sink? your glass? the TOILET?!) they most often just don’t drink enough water. Here’s what you need to know.

Pet Rescue Breathing & CPR Saves Cat & Dog Lives

Do you know how perform Pet Rescue Breathing and pet CPR? You can save your dog or cat’s life by knowing how to do pet CPR and how to perform rescue breathing. Pets suffer brain injury and death if oxygen is cut off for only a few minutes. When minutes count, rescue breathing can save your pet’s life.

How to Find Lost Pets

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month. More pets disappear over the July 4th holiday than any other time, because they get so scared about the noise. But pets get lost all the time. Both Karma-Kat and Shadow appeared as lost babies. Please bookmark this site for tips how to find lost pets.

Scaredy Cat? Teaching Shrinking Violet Shy Cats

Do you have a scaredy cat? Working with fearful and scared cats can be a challenge. Does Sheba hiss at strangers? Does Tom dive under the bed when the doorbell rings? Do your kitties attack other pets (or humans)? What can you do to stop bad behavior if even a mild correction sends the cat into fearful meltdown? Here’s help.

Fear of Fireworks & Thunder? How to Calm Pet Noise Fears

Does your dog fear fireworks? What can you do for a cat or dog scared of fireworks? What about earplugs for dogs? Cats aren’t immune so New Year’s celebrations, Memorial Day (or graduation hijinks), July 4th fireworks, and thunderstorms can turn pets into shivery bundles of fur when BOOMS, bright lights, or even wind and rain noise fill the sky. Pets can be scared of all kinds of loud noises, and I get asked for advice all the time.

I share this information twice a year in time for July 4 fireworks, and the New Year fireworks. No matter the time of year, always pay attention to pet safety. . .

First Aid for Pet Drowning

Swimming comes naturally to most animals, but pet drowning happens just as easily. Many puppies leap before they look, or simply fall into the swimming pool, hot tub or break through ice on the lake and can’t get out. Dog paddling may be instinctive, but they can still drown if they can’t climb out and get too tired to float. Learn how to treat dog drowning and save pet drowning victims…
