Service Dogs Puppy Raisers: NEADS Needs You!

by | May 6, 2025 | Dog Training & Care | 0 comments

Recently I received a press release from NEADS with information about their program that I’m sure many of my readers would love to learn about. They suggest retired or elderly owners who may be gun-shy to choose a breed to adopt because of lifestyle may relish this opportunity if looking for a very fulfilling volunteer experience.

NEADS offers the widest array of Service Dog programs in the industry, including Service Dogs for adults and children with a physical disability, Service Dogs for veterans, Service Dogs for Hearing, and Service Dogs for children with autism or other developmental disabilities. NEADS dogs are also partnered with professionals in classroom, therapy, hospital, ministry, and courthouse settings. As of 2022, NEADS has earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for more than 20 consecutive years. NEADS places their dogs nationally.

NEADS BREEDING PROGRAM

NEADS has its own breeding program. THe dogs are primarily Labrador Retrievers specially bred for health, temperament, and longevity.

With a NEADS-driven Breeding Program, we are less reliant on external sources for puppies that have a temperament and health profile that meet our world Class Service Dog standards.  Controlling for temperament, health, and overall suitability for Service Dog work enables us to increase our pool of purpose-bred Service Dogs. This is key to ensuring that we can get more dogs through training and place more dogs with people in need.

PUPPY RAISERS

NEADS offers flexibility in raising their lovely babies. You can become part of a Team Puppy Raiser. College Puppy Raisers bring the older 6/8-month-old pup to live with them and go to class and continue training.

Weekend Puppy Raisers are part of the Prison PUP Program, and take the pups out on weekends for additional training. Volunteer Weekend Puppy Raisers take NEADS puppies out of the Prison PUP program each weekend for one to two years to work on house manners, socialization and training. NEADS has programs at various prisons, including Gardner, MA and Framingham, MA. NEADS also has puppies available for Weekend Puppy Raisers at its Princeton campus. This program is only available in Massachussets and Rhode Island.

Full-Time Puppy Raisers take Service Dogs in Training into their homes and provide care, socialization, and basic obedience training for 6 to 12 months, playing a crucial role in preparing these dogs for their future role as Service Dogs. A team raising program is also available, through which volunteers work as part of a team to collaboratively raise a dog for 6 to 12 months, working out a schedule to ensure the NEADS dog is cared for seven days a week.

Who Qualifies to Be A Puppy Raiser?

Puppy raisers can be individuals, couples, families, and retirees with a passion for dogs. They can be people who can dedicate time to training and socializing a young, energetic dog. And many times, puppy raisers simply want to make a real difference in their community.

  • Puppy Raiser candidates must be willing and able to:
  • Provide a nurturing home environment for a Service Dog in Training
  • Work on critical socialization and basic obedience, following NEADS outlined training protocols to expose the dog to everyday life in public settings, including malls, restaurants, and grocery stores to familiarize with various sounds, sights, and people.
  • Physically manage a young and energetic dog
  • Attend training sessions with a NEADS trainer. Classes are held virtually, at the NEADS campus, and at locations mutually convenient for the Raisers and Instructors

NEADS Details (or …de Tails?)

“The demand for highly trained Service Dogs continues to grow,” says Heather Romanoff, Manager of Raiser Operations. “Puppy Raisers are essential partners in our mission and have a unique and rewarding opportunity to help prepare these amazing animals for a career of helping individuals with disabilities. It’s a truly rewarding experience.”

NEADS provides comprehensive support to Puppy Raisers, including all food, veterinary care, and necessary supplies for the dog and ongoing, individualized support and training assistance from experienced professionals.

The process begins with the submission of an online application. If it is a good fit, a NEADS staff member will be in touch to schedule an orientation, which is followed by a home visit prior to receiving the Service Dog in Training. Questions can be submitted via an online form here on www.neads.org

Pets And Snakebite First Aid

Snakebites are common in pets, especially dogs, because dogs are often curious and try to play with moving critters. In fact, about 150,000 dogs and cats are bitten by poisonous snakes each year in the United States alone. Learn about the top villains and what to do in this post.

9 Bucket List Activities to Do With Your Aging Pet

I adore the golden oldie pets. My Seren-Kitty lived to nearly 22 years old, my first shepherd made it to just over 13 years old, and Magical-Dawg lived large and loud until 11 years old. Seren just wouldn’t give up, despite her arthritic clawed paws click-click-clicking as she tottered along. When Karma arrived, he acted like the fountain of youth and gave her a boost. Here are some tips for fun things to do with your golden oldie…

Why Dogs Chew Your Best Stuff

Dogs use their mouths like people use our hands. That means nearly everything goes into the puppy’s mouth as he explores the world, and teething pups chew to relieve the discomfort. Dogs never outgrow the gnawing habit, though, and that can get them in trouble.

Here’s why they target your favorite things…and what you can do to reduce the risk.

Pet Dehydration? Causes, Symptoms & First Aid for Dog Dehydration and Cat Dehydration

Cat and dog dehydration refers to the excessive loss of body water. Pets are prone to dehydration when the weather gets very hot, and they don’t have access to enough water. As a result, they can develop heatstroke. More often, though, dog and cat dehydration happens from vomiting and diarrhea.

Here in Texas, we’ve had weeks of triple-digit temperatures. I worry about the outside pets, but even indoor cats and dogs can suffer from dehydration. Normal water loss occurs in the pet’s bathroom deposits, through moisture exhaled with the breath, and through sweat. These fluids get replaced when the cat and dog eat and drink.

Any illness may prompt pets to stop eating and drinking, and prolonged fever increases the loss of body fluid. Specific disease conditions or injuries like diabetes or kidney disease may cause excessive urination that also causes of dehydration.

Cats evolved as desert creatures and have an amazing ability to conserve water, but cat dehydration can still kill. Even though cats seem to prefer to drink water in the weirdest places (the sink? your glass? the TOILET?!) they most often just don’t drink enough water. Here’s what you need to know.

Pet Rescue Breathing & CPR Saves Cat & Dog Lives

Do you know how perform Pet Rescue Breathing and pet CPR? You can save your dog or cat’s life by knowing how to do pet CPR and how to perform rescue breathing. Pets suffer brain injury and death if oxygen is cut off for only a few minutes. When minutes count, rescue breathing can save your pet’s life.

How to Find Lost Pets

July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month. More pets disappear over the July 4th holiday than any other time, because they get so scared about the noise. But pets get lost all the time. Both Karma-Kat and Shadow appeared as lost babies. Please bookmark this site for tips how to find lost pets.

Scaredy Cat? Teaching Shrinking Violet Shy Cats

Do you have a scaredy cat? Working with fearful and scared cats can be a challenge. Does Sheba hiss at strangers? Does Tom dive under the bed when the doorbell rings? Do your kitties attack other pets (or humans)? What can you do to stop bad behavior if even a mild correction sends the cat into fearful meltdown? Here’s help.

Fear of Fireworks & Thunder? How to Calm Pet Noise Fears

Does your dog fear fireworks? What can you do for a cat or dog scared of fireworks? What about earplugs for dogs? Cats aren’t immune so New Year’s celebrations, Memorial Day (or graduation hijinks), July 4th fireworks, and thunderstorms can turn pets into shivery bundles of fur when BOOMS, bright lights, or even wind and rain noise fill the sky. Pets can be scared of all kinds of loud noises, and I get asked for advice all the time.

I share this information twice a year in time for July 4 fireworks, and the New Year fireworks. No matter the time of year, always pay attention to pet safety. . .
