  1. Monday Mentions: Internet Kerflooey, Writing Challenges & Bling-icity

April 22, 2013 by Amy Shojai

    Bling Toes!

When I’m frustrated, I just turn to a bling pick-me-up!

I’m typing from Panera Bread because my DSL line has gone ker-flooey (that’s a techie term). Since the promised fix isn’t scheduled until Monday afternoon, I’m finish up the blog post and scheduling so it will go out even if — (gasp!) — the fix doesn’t happen. See, the internet went down last Thursday morning and I called immediately and was promised it would be fixed the next day “between 1-5 pm.” But nobody came.

Hey, life happens and you make it work anyway, right? I’m actually getting quite a lot of writing done without the distraction of email. So I’ve saved up all the new puppy-licious articles, blog posts, and other writer-ly schtuff and batching it to publish in marathon coffee sessions here at the restaurant. I’ll get everything done, no doubt. I just hope that I can resist the allure of all the bakery enticements.

Monday Mentions is the mash-up-day of all the neato-torpedo writer links and videos, pet schtuff and bling and writer-icity crappiocca collected over the past week. Check out the SQUEEE! cute pet-astic videos at the bottom, too. For new followers to the blog, welcome! and you can expect more cat and dog specific schtuff later in the week on Wednesday and Friday.

Liz Wilson, a legend of the companion bird community, has died. The video below was a tribute to her produce three years ago–if nothing else you must watch the opening free-flighted macaws….just spectacular!

  2. Monday Mentions: Pink Flamingo Dreams & Brass Rings

March 25, 2013 by Amy Shojai

    SPARKLY-KEYBOARD.jpg

This past week has been a killer. Last Monday began well as I wrote a fun and exciting chapter on the LOST AND FOUND sequel and looked forward to the weekly Monday night CAT CRAZY radio program. But then the day tanked as my laptop died. Before folks start preaching the gospel of Mac, this had nothing to do with a virus and everything (apparently) to do with unstable North Texas power grid that tends to fry “motherboards” quicker than chicken-fried armadillo. Anyway, the laptop surgeons are prepping for a transplant once the new motherboard arrives, which means finishing up my next audio book has been put on hold. See, all the audio software is on the laptop, so it’s mobile and can move into my “sound studio” (aka office walk in closet).

    .

There were a few other angsty happenings that truly got blown out of proportion because my nerves were already off the charts over the laptop. So I’ve been yearning for some Pink Flamingo Dreams that help me keep a-reaching for those writerly brass rings. Every artist has their own kind of brass ring and safe place.

The photo above taken at the annual writer retreat. When I get discouraged, the goofy bird reminds me that even outrageous creatures like flamingos exist (and unlikely dreams  like getting fiction published can come true). That place in the mountains is my happy place where the phone doesn’t ring, friendship and laughter abound, and all the ills of the world are left far behind. It’s where I go to recharge. Do you have a place like that, virtual or otherwise, that you share with family and/or friends? What’s your pink flamingo?

RLPN-ListenToMyShowOnI’ve crossed all the monthly must-do’s off the list–except for tonight’s CAT CRAZY radio show (PLEASE listen/call in with your catty comments & questions!). And with my calendar cleared, this will be a week full of fiction-ing so I’m channeling “the bird” this week. What’s on your weekly to-do list?

  3. Monday Mentions: Furry Inspiration & Writing Help

January 28, 2013 by Amy Shojai

This morning I take the Magical-Dawg for his annual vet check up (shhhh, it’s a surprise!). He actually enjoys the whole deal (CAR RIDE? YESSSS!) and loves snort-snuffling the outside postage-stamp grassy patch where he reads the latest Pee-Mail for the best doggy gossip. Of course, he has to add his liquid comment to the mix. At least he doesn’t baptize the interior of the clinic, but does his best to announce, “Big dawg is here…y’all!” with explosive barks as he enters the door. I’m always a wee bit concerned some poor little Grandma will pass out from the shock, and then Magical-Dawg will smooch her back to consciousness.

Seren-kitty got a virtual birthday card this week from the vet. She’s sixteen. Wow, the time has sped by but despite some hearing issues that increase the volume of her meow, and some arthritic claws, Seren looks and acts much younger. To celebrate, she helped me un-make and then make the bed (a favorite cat game) and then she got thoroughly wasted on some high quality ‘nip.

How do you celebrate your pets’ birthdays? Actually we don’t know Seren’s real day, so picked one, and I know many folks who instead celebrate the pet’s “gotcha day.” At my house, every day’s a celebration. I couldn’t do what I do without my furry muses (those present and those still in my heart…) I just got delivery dates for the sequel to my thriller YAY! but that means I’ll be head-down (and head-banging) fictioning for the foreseeable future. My furry muses are primed and ready to inspire!

Monday Mentions is the mash-up-day of all the neato-torpedo writer links and videos, pet schtuff and bling and writer-icity crappiocca collected over the past week. I’ve been head-down recording the narration on my ComPETability/Cats book…yes, doing it myself! But when you’re not equipped to voice a project yourself, this article has great tips for choosing a VO professional.
