  1. BlogPaws 2013: PAW-SOME Video, Pix & More

May 22, 2013 by Amy Shojai

    Blogpaws 064

Some pets had better hair than the rest of us!

I wasn’t sure what to expect at BlogPaws 2013. You see, I’ve attended and spoken at several dozen “writer” conferences over the years such as the awesome OWFI event and Thrillerfest in New York. I’ve also gone to many veterinary conferences that included hands-on-the-fur sessions. Pet-centric behavior conferences such as the APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) conference allowed dogs to attend–bliss! And even a few of the IAABC (International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants) and the Cat Writers’ Association (my fav!) often include our animal companions.

After attending, I wanted to share a newbie’s-eye-view of the event…so check out photos, and the fun VIDEOS below for a taste!

    Blogpaws 045

    Lap dogs were welcome, too.

All of these other conferences offer outstanding information to their target audience. A small number are what I’d call “newbie friendly” and embrace pro and beginner alike (ain’t that as it should be?) while some tend to clique-icity and can be daunting to a newcomer. So as a relative newcomer to the world of blogging (although I’ve been a writing pro far longer than I care to admit), I wasn’t sure what BlogPaws had to offer me–or if I’d be more on the outside-looking-in.

    Blogpaws 124

I finally got to meet Carol Bryant! (Next year, I’m bringing my Seren-kitty and Magical-Dawg stand-ins.

What a marvelous surprise to discover the atmosphere and “culture” similar to my beloved CWA conference, in which helping one another, mentoring and celebrating each others’ success are founding principles. PAW-some!

    Blogpaws2 029

Remember the “lion” that terrorized the neighborhood profiled on CNN last year? Charles the Monarch attended…and soon after this pix, he slipped his leash and made a mad dash away to find his ‘dad.’ (He was easily corralled *s*)

Mee-WOW and oh-my-doG, this was a fun event! It had the best of all furry (and feather-y…perhaps even scaley) worlds! More than 500 bloggers attended, each dedicated to providing pet-specific information for, about, or even BY animal companions (yes, in the ferret’s voice, for instance). Not only were the speakers outstanding, those just a wee bit shy could calm themselves by schmoozing with one of the many critters in attendance.

    Blogpaws 072

Some pets took notes during the sessions on their “paw-top” computers.

Pet products companies provided information and samples, plus a priceless opportunity to speak one-on-one with folks as passionate about our animals as we are. The food was terrific–and yep, we got to take meals alongside the dogs and cats and bunnies–pets were well behaved, and the high fashion couture was to-die-for (and I’m talking about the pets!).

    Blogpaws 077

Proof that Deborah Barnes (Chronicles of Zee & Zoey)  likes dogs, too!

Those who know me are aware that I enjoy a bit of bling-icity, so I felt right at home during my Ebook Publishing For Bloggers talk (although there wasn’t nearly enough time to get in all the info I wanted). It was also an opportunity to finally meet face-to-face some of the bloggers I’ve loved reading.

    Blogpaws 106

Debbie Glovatsky, (GloGirl), Kimberly Gauthier (KeepTheTailWagging) and me…

BlogPaws Conference 2014 will be just outside Las Vegas May 8-11, 2014 and I’ve already registered because…well, this year was terrific. But I happen to have some EXTREE-SECRET-SPASHUL-AWESOME-SAUCE info that means it’ll be even MORE outrageously good!

Need more convincing? Check out the three short videos, below. Magical-Dawg and Seren-Kitty are vying for who gets to go next year!

Just back from an AMAZING time at the Oklahoma Writers Federation Conference, where I presented a fun lunch workshop THE REINVENTED WRITER (complete with SQUEEE! cute pet pix). I’ve not missed one of these conferences since I attended my first in 1992, and am a former president of OWFI and honorary lifetime member. I’ve received awards from the contest, gotten writing assignments, found my agent there (although we’ve now parted ways), and made some of the best friends and writer-ly connections ever.

If you missed out on my workshop, never fear–it will be presented Saturday May 25 at 2:00 Eastern Time at WANA International as a WEBINAR for online in-your-pj’s attendance and no travel to-from a hotel. The class isn’t yet posted …but I’ll send the direct link as soon as it is. I’ll be presenting several online WEBINAR sessions in the coming months and will be sure to post announcements here.

The Dog Writers Association of America (DWAA) annual Awards Banquet is the night before the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Sunday, February 10, 2013. This year my work has been nominated in three categories, for best newspaper column, best website, and best radio podcast. The DWAA is a great organization for those who write about dogs to network and support each other.

WANA stands for WE ARE NOT ALONE and is the brainchild of the energetic social media maven Kristen Lamb. I took one of her email courses on blogging some time ago and it’s changed the way I work and expanded my reach! Kristen and her team have a “virtual” conference planned WANA CON, so if traveling for you is outside your budget, this may fit the bill. More information here.

    blogpaws

Yes, there are conferences for pet-centric folk, too. If you’re a blogger who includes any sort of CRITTER in your content (or maybe your pets take over the keyboard now and then), you’ll want to check out BlogPaws. I’m saving my pennies and hoping to finally attend this next one. This is a year-round organization that supports and offers education to pet bloggers on all the must-knows, so even if you have a conference conflict, check out BlogPaws.com to connect with other pet lovers. Click the banner to learn more about the conference.

    OWFI

I’m an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Oklahoma Writers Federation, Inc. and was president for its 40th anniversary event five years ago. It’s one of the most economical conferences around, and where I found my awesome agent many years ago. This year as a speaker I discuss THE REINVENTED WRITER, covering all the new ways to publish, promote and SUCCEED as a modern writer. I hope you’ll join me. (And yes, I’ll wear sparkles :) )

    Thrillerfest

ThrillerFest VIII promises to be one of the best conferences of the year. Maybe I’m a weeee bit prejudice, because I met my editor and publisher at my first ITW event–and this year, I’ll be in the Debut Author Breakfast Panel celebrating publication of LOST AND FOUND! Yes, dreams can come true. Check out this wonderful guest blog by another ITW and awesome thriller author Alma Katsu to learn more about the event.

  4. Lost and Found: THE NEXT BIG THING BLOG HOP

December 5, 2012 by Amy Shojai

Welcome to the NEXT  BIG THING blog hop.

What is a blog hop? Basically, it’s a way that readers can discover new authors, because with bookstores closing and publishers not promoting new authors as much, we need to find a way to introduce readers to authors they may not see in their local bookstore. So I get to give a shout-out to the wonderful author who invited me to this “dance” and then invite (and highlight) five more terrific authors at the end of the blog.

Debut thriller author Donna Galanti invited me to join the “hop” and I’d met her first by email and later in person at Thrillerfest last summer. Her paranormal suspense novel, A Human Element, is a spooky, thrilling read–don’t take my word for it. NY Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry calls her story, “an elegant and haunting first novel. Unrelenting, devious but full of heart.” See the links at the end for to five other authors you really MUST check out. Check out Donna Galanti’s website here, and you can buy A HUMAN ELEMENT at amazon or B&N or even iTunes.

    :)

3: What genre does your book come under?

    Thriller and suspense.

4: Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Wow, that’s a tough question. See, in another life I’m an actor and I know there are fantastic Texas actors who could give stellar performances so if I was fortunate enough to have LOST AND FOUND optioned, I’d hope the movie would offer break-out opportunities for up and coming talent. So I’m going to cheat and not name names…and instead ask my readers to suggest in the comments what actors they might see in the following roles:

September, April, Combs, Lizzie, Ghost, Doty, Gonzales, Humphrey Fish, Steven . . . Shadow and Macy. :)

5: What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

An autism cure will kill millions unless a service dog and his trainer find a missing child . . . in 24 hours.

6: Is your book self-published, published by an independent publisher, or represented by an agency?

LOST AND FOUND is published by a hybrid publisher, Cool Gus Publishing

7: How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

It took me YEARS to write the first draft of LOST AND FOUND, because I work full time as a nonfiction writer and repeatedly had to set the story aside. Paying the bills often sidetracked me. But more recently the nonfiction books now take a back seat to the fiction, and I anticipate the sequel HIDE AND SEEK to be ready for publication much sooner.

8: What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Reviewers have compared LOST AND FOUND to the medical thrillers by Michael Palmer and to the marvelous story THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN because of the dog viewpoint character. Dean Koontz also writes marvelous stories that includes dog characters, but about the only thriller that I know of that comes close to a similar dog viewpoint is James Rollins and his great book BLOODLINE that features the war dog Kane. I was very fortunate to have Jim agree to read an advance copy of my book and offer a marvelous cover quote, too!

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="608" Magic homecoming 3 What's going on inside that furry head? ...my answer is in LOST AND FOUND.

9: Who or what inspired you to write this book?

My dog Magic inspired me to write this book. For years I’ve looked for a book that I wanted to read, one that included thrills and made the hear trace, a story that incorporated medical issues, and above all, one that respected animal characters as ANIMALS and wrote them from that perspective–not as little humans wearing fur. Finally I wrote the book that I wanted to read.

10: What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

The story is science based. Yes, there really are drugs given to children without having been tested on the children. And yes, dogs CAN learn vocabulary just as quickly as Shadow does in the “name game” scene. And finally yes, cats can be trained–and Macy’s “hero cat” scene where she “nails” the bad guys at the end is also based on something that really happened.

Below you will find authors (in no particular order) who will be joining me by blog, next Wednesday. Do be sure to bookmark and add them to your calendars for updates on WIPs and New Releases! Happy Writing and Reading!

    1. Clea Simon writes awesome cat-centric mysteries and I know her through membership in the Cat Writers Association. Check out her great blog at Cats, Crime & Rock & Roll
    2. Arden Moore, America’s Pet Edu-Tainer, writes terrific cat and dog care books, one of which was ranked #3 of ALL BOOKS on amazon!  In a former life Arden was my editor, and we share a birthday (one month apart). She has some new books in the pipeline and blogs at Four Legged Life
    3. Carol Shenold has been in my writers group for more than 20 years and is one of my dearest friends and a talented tech writer and novelist. She writes paranormal mysteries. Learn about her work and check out her Monster Under The Bed blog.
    4. Check out Michael W. Sherer blog here. He writes terrific mysteries AND thrillers. I met him through Thriller Writers, and he invited me to participate in an AWESOME Kindle Fire give-away (plus some autographed books from famous thriller authors).
    5. Victor DiGenti (writing as Parker Francis) publishes mysteries and has also written award-winning YA cat fantasy. Like Clea, we also met through Cat Writers Association.

  5. Monday Mentions: Rabbit Holes, Sandra Brown & Cats Rule

October 1, 2012 by Amy Shojai

Happy Monday. This week has got to be an improvement over last week’s virus, Internet kerfluffle and AC outage. In my world it seems “crappiocca” comes in threes–so hopefully my crap quota has been filled and I’ve tunneled out of the rabbit hole. For now.

There was some terrific stuff, too. I met an awesome blogger (new to me) at Healing Rescue Dogs Blog and she interviewed me about LOST AND FOUND. Want to know more? October 1-7 (that starts today!) I’m discussing myths about writing thrillers as part of THE BIG THRILL ROUNDTABLE PANEL.

Want more? (gulp!) I’ll be over at DogRead as the guest author starting today (Oct. 1) through Oct. 15. This is a yahoogroups email list dedicated to discussion dog books–and the many of list members are savvy dog trainers, exhibitors and more, I can’t wait to talk “dawg” and writing! You can subscribe and lurk, post questions, come and go as you like–it’s free. Here’s the link to find out more.

I will be sending out the copies of the LOST AND FOUND book to the winners–as soon as I get my copies! Arggg! There must be something up with the mail these days, because several of my online orders recently have been delayed or gone astray. Doncha HATE when that happens? I even have the padded envelopes addressed and ready to mail. Thanks for your patience–me, I’m biting nails!

I promise to get some more ASK AMY videos made. Several folks have asked terrific questions either on my Facebook pages or in blog comments. It’s been too long…but yep, been a weee bit busy. :) I’m saving the questions, though, so stay tuned.

Monday Mentions is the mash-up-day of all the neato-torpedo writer links and videos, pet schtuff and bling and writer-icity crappiocca collected over the past week. Some of this “schtuff” can be hard to categorize and may fit more than one topic so I urge you to at least scan them all. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom for an awesome Thrillerfest interview with some legends–Sandra Brown, RL Stein and David Morrell!

  7. Monday Mentions: Stranger Than Fiction?

September 17, 2012 by Amy Shojai

It’s stranger than fiction that, “The hurrier I go, the behinder I get.” That seems to be the theme these days. So much awesomeness will happen in the weeks ahead I can barely stand it!

LOST AND FOUND releases Thursday, yeeee-haw! Hope y’all will come to the “virtual” book release party (Don’t worry, I’ll post a special blog with details when I catch my breath. *S*)  I’ll also be the guest author October 1-15 on the Dog Read List, an online book club discussion group. With my full calendar the “in person official launch party” will come later (keep reading).

That’s because KURVES, THE MUSICAL revival cast has begun rehearsing for our back-by-popular-demand return to The Rialto Oct 11, 12, 13. Yes, I’m singing and acting…again…with many of the original cast returning, plus some new blood for some fresh takes on the material. It’s soooo much fun!

Once the show closes, my official “book launch party” for LOST AND FOUND will be hosted by the gracious student members of their Writers Club at the local Grayson College from 12-1:00 on Friday October 26. I’ll sign books, answer questions and share publishing/writing secrets from the official extra-secret-spectacular Author’s Official Handbook. (kidding…) More details to come, but y’all are invited!

The first weekend of November I’ll be in Los Angeles celebrating the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Cat Writers Association, again signing books, presenting a talk on DIY Ebooks, and also SINGING a couple of songs from the next original show, STRAYS, THE MUSICAL. Whew…I’m out of breath.

You’ll have to indulge me a weeee bit today, because SQUEEE! the full cover of my thriller is now available and it (DOUBLE SQUEEE!) has a cat on the back.

I’ve already had two great write-ups about the book, an advance review at Darlene Arden’s PerPETually Speaking and an interview today at Mary Shafer’s Author Blog, woot! Thanks so much to both these terrific writers.

That’s not the only news, though. Last week I announced a new Kindle-lized book, and this week to share my delight in all-things-furry, I’m giving them away. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday the Multi-Dog ComPETability book is free on Kindle. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the Multi-Cat ComPETability book is free. And Wednesday, Thursday and Friday the Cat-Dog ComPETability book is free. I hope you’ll share the news with your pet-loving friends.

Now on to the other fun stuff. I’ve published nonfiction books with “traditional” publishers, brought my backlist and new nonfiction to life as an “indie” author, and my fiction will be published by a small press. Maybe I’m a hybrid, I don’t know. But the video, below, has some great insight from smarter and more successful authors that have taken a similar path, so don’t miss taking a look at this glimpse of one of the terrific 2012 Thrillerfest Panels on going “indie.”

Meanwhile I’ve compiled the usual helpful and fun links. Enjoy!

Monday Mentions is the mash-up-day of all the neato-torpedo links and videos, pet schtuff and bling and writer-icity crappiocca collected over the past week. Some of this “schtuff” can be hard to categorize and may fit more than one topic so I urge you to at least scan them all.
