My Cat & Dog Hates My Date! Valentines Tips For Pets Lovers

by | Feb 9, 2026 | Cat Behavior & Care | 18 comments

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but all too often I hear the lament, MY CAT HATES MY DATE! Dogs tend to be more forgiving but there can be dogs that hate your boyfriend, too. It seems appropriate to revisit the topic, so I’ve updated this post.

Key Takeaways

  • Valentine’s Day approaches, highlighting the common issue of pets, especially cats, disliking dates.
  • The article offers updates on popular YouTube tips, including emergency tips for cat sitters.
  • Readers should be aware of Valentine’s Day pet dangers affecting both cats and dogs.
  • Winning over your date’s pet can strengthen your relationship; consider gifts for the pet instead.
  • The author encourages readers to share their thoughts on dating someone who dislikes pets, emphasizing the importance of pet compatibility.

“He’s looking at me, what do I say?…he IS kinda cute…”

The past few years, I’ve recorded a couple hundred videos in ASK AMY quick tips on my YouTube channel. So I figured it’s appropriate to share with you one of the most popular ones “My Cat Hates My Boyfriend!” as well as a couple of brand new ones. Scroll down for the latest–some tips for an emergency cat sitter helping out a friend, when the cat HATES the stranger.

You’ll also want to check out Valentine’s Day pet dangers. Yes, there are some scary things that can affect cats and dogs, so take a look here.

The best way to your lover’s heart and affections, though, is to win over the pet. Instead of giving her a gift, bring something for your girlfriend’s dog or cat. That shows you’re not only considerate of what’s important to your date, but that you’re sensitive to her family (the furry ones).

So in addition to these brief videos, you can find detailed step by step info in my quick-tips guides. Hey, it’s not just about dates…what happens if the pet hates the new grandbaby?

Here’s a fun question, I’d love to know. Would you ever date (or consider marrying) someone who didn’t like your pets? Or that your pets didn’t like? Do tell!

I love hearing from you, so please share comments and questions. Do you have an ASK AMY question you’d like answered? Do you have a new kitten and need answers? Stay up to date on all the latest just subscribe the blog, “like” me on Facebook, and sign up for Pet Peeves newsletter.

I love this post and your videos! I’m subscribing to your channel now! I’m still dating so this is a topic very close to my heart. My dogs have loved everyone they have ever met but you never know. For me, the problem is making sure the man I’m dating actually likes being around my dogs. If he doesn’t, I already know it won’t work.

While dogs need to be trained and socialized, I do feel better about people who make an effort to make friends with them, even if it’s just tossing a treat in their general direction.

If I ever did have a date, he better take care of my girls and show them appropriate attention!

This is such a fun, but important post. I would NOT date anyone who didn’t love my pets. Now, for the record, I have been happily married for twenty years. My now husband and I talked about our cats (he had one and I had two) on our first date and by the second date, he asked to meet my cats and was quite good with them. They seemed to approve of him and so things proceeded very well and here we are 20 years later.

My future husband met me at my parent’s house and was amazed (and intrigued) by the 3 shelties (“they’re so clean! and inside dogs?!”) and from there, it only got better. We’ll celebrate 36 years this summer.

Hmmm… I think they would have to at least get along with Mr. N. They don’t have to be crazy dog people but at least like dogs!

This is such a hot topic, especially in the month of Love! When I had this issue I worked on it with training. I wouldn’t just give up on a mate, I’d try diligently to work on the problem through training – training BOTH the pet and the guy or gal!

In most cases (unless the person is just EVIL), training can work wonders. The person has to want to change, and understand why it’s important. I think most pets will meet people halfway if they at least try. Well…not cats, necessarily. *s*

Love me – Love my pets I say! I couldn’t imagine being with someone that didn’t like pets or animals as much as I do.

I think as long as the person understands and accepts that pets are important to the human they love, some training and patience can help both parties.

My cat at the time HIGHLY, HIGHLY approved of my husband-then-boyfriend (and he was a great choice) so I’d say your date has to pass your cat’s vetting!

There are rare exceptions but mostly people who don’t like cats aren’t people I want to be around.

    Love the topic!

New World Screwworm: What Pet Owners Need to Know

New World screwworm, or Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a parasitic blow fly. As an adult, the fly causes little harm but becomes a hazard because it lays eggs in open wounds. The eggs develop into screw-shaped larvae (maggots). Unlike more common species of maggots that eat dead material, screwworm larvae eat living tissue. They cause a devastating impact on livestock when the blow fly lays eggs in open wounds. It gets its name from the habit of burrowing (or screwing itself) into the wound. Read on to learn more…

Fearful Fido? Know the Signs of Dog Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS)

Do you have a fearful Fido? Do you need help with the loud thunderstorms happening this time of year that makes dogs scared? It seems silly, but some dogs feel stress when their human wears a hat! I wanted to share some resources for recognizing and understanding signs of canine fear, anxiety, and stress.

How Do Dogs And Cats Drink Water

How do your pets drink? Do your pets drink from toilets? I found these videos and they were just too good not to share! I’ve written before about why they choose to slurp from that “porcelain thrown” but not the “how” it’s done. Read on for details about how pets drink.

Tips for Adopt A Cat Month: Shelter Cats Rock!

I see so many kitten pictures on social media these days. Every June, we celebrate National Adopt A Cat Month (sponsored by American Humane Association) and also National Adopt A Shelter Cat Month (sponsored by the ASPCA. Two holidays wrapped up in one, and how appropriate, since June is kitten season.

But cats can be adopted year around. Both of our cats came to us as “dumped” kitties, showing up on the back porch. When you adopt from a shelter, though, you have the advantage of planning for the new kitty’s arrival. Any time is a good time to bring a new furry wonder into your life. Whether you adopt a shelter cat, foster a kitten, or adopt a cat that shows up on the doorstep, they’re all worthy of love. Right? Here’s my tips guide for cat adoption…

Dog Problems? Cat Concerns? Here’s How to Find Pet Behavior Help

Do you know how do you find pet behavior help? As a certified animal behavior consultant for cats and dogs, I receive many requests for pet behavior help. Solving cat behavior problems and bad dog behavior can be a challenge. Some of these I address with articles explaining cat behavior (how to stop meowing, for example, or dealing with cat aggression), as well as puppy and dog behavior issues like noise phobias and separation behaviors.

Some pet behavior challenges have solutions through reading books and articles, others via phone call advice, and more serious issues (dog aggression, for example) need one-on-one help. But how do the behavior experts receive training?

Dog Hot Spots & Home Remedies

Dog hot spots often happen during both the spring and fall shedding season and are the bane of many dogs’ existence. Some develop hot spots all year long, especially those with very thick, wooly coats. Have your dogs ever suffered from hot spots?

Fortunately, hot spots are not a problem for cats. Kitties, though, do have their own issues with shedding and hairballs. Bathing cats can help with that.

When dog hot spots are a chronic problem, it can be aggravating and frustrating for pet owners. And painful for the dog! While severe problems need veterinary attention, home remedies for dog hot spots often help enormously. Here’s what you need to know.

Memorial Day & National K9 Veteran’s Day

Memorial Day honors the American men and women who have lost their lives while serving in the military. It originally honored those who died in the Civil War, and now honors those who died in any war. It is also known as Decoration Day. This holiday differs from Veterans’ Day which honors all those who served in the military.

There is no Memorial Day for the brave military K9s who served and lost their lives, often heroically saving their human partners. I can’t imagine the bond that must exist between the soldier and his or her war dog—they share things and stand against danger to protect the rest of us against horrors we don’t want to think about. And because of them, we don’t have to worry about such things. Thank you.

I’m eternally grateful to those who sacrifice for our freedom. Losing a beloved animal companion anytime cuts deep. It must be horrific to lose a comrade-in-arms, including those with four feet and fur.

And since I focus on pet issues, I want to shine a light on the dogs of the military. There is a National K9s Veteran’s Day on March 13, too. But here’s an excerpt from my book DOG LIFE  to shine a light on military dogs through the ages.
